I’m probably the last person anyone would expect to be ridding themselves of their cellphone, but since I cut off my service on September, I’ve been so much bloody happier.
I can now go places and listen to music and not be rudely interrupted by that familiar ringtone, BUT since WiFi is increasing in popularity, I still use my phones WiFi connection to connect to Skype/Yahoo/MSN and check my voice- and email while I’m in town.
I have non-geographic “land” numbers in several countries (Finland, New Zealand, Japan, Brazil, UK and USA) which all redirect to Skype – so if I’m not online, I get voicemail. If I’m online, I still get the call. And land lines are cheap or free to call FROM Skype (not that free minutes are a problem for Finnish cellphone subscribers), so it’s really a win-win situation.I get peace and quiet while I’m wandering around the city, but I’m still mobile enough that I can communicate on the move – and far less bloody tele-marketers.
I think it’s time I traded in my Nokia E51 for a Nokia N810 (a feasible move in Helsinki). IÂ don’t know if I’ll even get a cell number in India. Maybe a pre-paid or some kind of data-only plan. Guess I’ll have to see what is available. Maybe I’ll have to start a WiMax network of some kind.
